NGC 557 = IC 1703 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 250 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 50,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 535 , NGC 538 , NGC 541 , NGC 547 , among others .
The Type I supernova SN 1963E was observed here.
The object was discovered on November 20, 1886 by the American astronomer Lewis A. Swift and rediscovered on October 27, 1897 by Guillaume Bigourdan (listed as IC 1703 ).
