NGC 577 = NGC 580 is a 13 mag bright bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 267 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 150,000 ly. The object is a member of the Abell 194 galaxy cluster .
The galaxies NGC 564 , IC 119 , IC 120 , IC 126 are located in the same area of the sky .
It was discovered by Aaron Nichols Skinner on October 23, 1867 and later listed as NGC 577 . On August 14, 1877, it was discovered independently by Wilhelm Tempel , which later led to the catalog entry NGC 580 .
