NGC 596 is a cD galaxy of Hubble type E4 in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 85 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter. It is considered a member of the eight galaxies NGC 584 group ( LGG 27 ).

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 584 , NGC 586 , NGC 600 , NGC 607 .

The object was discovered on December 13, 1783 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
