NGC 586 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sa in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 85 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light-years across. Together with NGC 584 , it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair Holm 45 and is considered a member of the eight galaxies NGC 584 group ( LGG 27 ).
The object was discovered on September 10, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
