NGC 599 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is around 248 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 105,000 light years .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 589 , NGC 593 , NGC 601 , IC 128 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2010gz was observed here.
The object was discovered by William Herschel on November 27, 1785 .
