NGC 597 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Sculptor in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 224 million light years from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light years across.
The type IIP supernova SN 2009fr was observed here.
The object was discovered on September 25, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
