NGC 584 = IC 1712 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E4 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 82 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light-years across. Together with NGC 586 , it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair Holm 45 and is the brightest member of the NGC 584 group ( LGG 27 ).
The object was discovered on September 10, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
