NGC 636 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 84 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter. It is a member of the eight galaxies NGC 584 group ( LGG 27 ).
The object was discovered on January 10, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
