NGC 647 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 570 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 255,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 640 and NGC 649 , among others .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
