NGC 649 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sa in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 334 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 90,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 640 and NGC 647 , among others .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
