NGC 648 = IC 146 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E-S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 473 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter.

The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth (as NGC 648 ) and on September 30, 1892 by the French astronomer Stéphane Javelle (as IC 146 ).
