NGC 640 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 337 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 70,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 647 and NGC 649 .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
