Nilüfer Demir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nilüfer Demir (* 1986 ) is a Turkish photographer living in Bodrum ( Turkey ).

Demir has been working as a photographer in the region since 2003. She reported on the European refugee crisis in 2015 for the Turkish press agency Doğan Haber Ajansı .

Demir became famous after photographing the three-year-old drowned Syrian boy Alan Kurdi from Ain al-Arab on the beach in Bodrum on September 2, 2015 . His parents tried to reach the Greek island of Kos with him and his brother from Bodrum .

The photo of the drowned boy attracted worldwide attention and became the symbolic photo of the European refugee crisis. The photo was reprinted in a number of European media and a discussion arose as to how justified it was to publish a photo of a dead child. The photo was also shared thousands of times in social networks under the hashtag “#KiyiyaVuranInsanlik” (roughly: “Mankind washed up on the coast”).
