NGC 579 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc in the constellation triangle at the northern sky . It is an estimated 229 million light years away from the Milky Way and is about 100,000 light years in diameter . In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 582 and NGC 608 .
The Type-IIn (pec) supernova SN 2007pk was observed here.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on November 22nd, 1827 .
