NGC 556 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 435 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 554 , NGC 555 , NGC 578 .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Frank Muller .
