NGC 553 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 235 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 40,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 515 , NGC 517 , NGC 528 , IC 1692 .
The object was discovered on September 13, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
