NGC 538 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 247 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 95,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 535 , NGC 541 , NGC 545 , NGC 547 .
The object was discovered on November 20, 1886 by the American astronomer Lewis A. Swift .
