NGC 521 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 227 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 175,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 533 , IC 103 , IC 105 , IC 1694 .
The supernovae SN 1966G (Type-I), SN 1982O and SN 2006G (Type-SN.II / IIb) were discovered here.
The object was discovered on October 8, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
