NGC 546 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBb in the Sculptor constellation in the southern sky . It is an estimated 288 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 120,000 ly. Together with NGC 544 , it probably forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair.
The galaxies NGC 534 and NGC 549 are located in the same area of the sky .

The object was discovered on October 23, 1835 by the British astronomer John Frederick William Herschel .
