NGC 539 is a barred spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type SBc in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 429 million light years from the Milky Way and about 200,000 ly in diameter.
The type Ia supernova SN 2008gg observed.
The object it was discovered as a foggy object on October 31, 1885 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
