NGC 561 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 215 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 100,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 529 , NGC 531 , NGC 536 , NGC 542 , among others .
The object was discovered on August 23, 1862 by the German-Danish astronomer Heinrich Louis d'Arrest .
