NGC 550 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sa in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 263 million light years from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 533 , IC 103 , IC 105 , IC 109 .
The supernova SN 1961Q was observed here.
The object was discovered on October 8, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
