NGC 533 is an E3 type elliptical galaxy located in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 251 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 280,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the u. a. the galaxies NGC 521 , IC 103 , IC 109 , IC 1694 .
The object was discovered on October 8, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
