IC 1697 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 387 million light years from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 100,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 493 and IC 1681 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 18, 1897 .
