Busscar Ônibus SA was a Brazilian manufacturer of buses based in Joinville . The company, which was founded in 1946, ceased production in 2010 after experiencing severe economic difficulties in 2008. In 2011, the company was in liquidation and there is speculation about the takeover of the production facilities by Caio Induscar , possibly in partnership with Busscar’s formerly largest competitor, Marcopolo . Busscar also had factories in Colombia and Mexico. In September 2012, a Brazilian court ruled that the company was bankrupt .

history

Low-floor trolleybus from 2007 in São Paulo

The company was founded on September 17, 1946 by two brothers of Swedish descent, Augusto Bruno Nielson and Eugênio Nielson. Back then, they opened a joinery in Joinville , where they made wooden furniture, windows and more. A year later they produced the first bus body - made entirely of wood. A large Chevrolet served as the chassis . This was the beginning of bus production and in the last few decades the company has become one of the most important bus manufacturers in the world. Because when Harold Nielson (Augusto's eldest son) joined the company Carrocerias Nielson in 1956 , the company was on the way to becoming the leading bus manufacturer in Brazil - with innovative and revolutionary products such as: B. the Diplomata in 1961 or the Urbanuss 1987. The company was renamed Busscar Ônibus SA in 1990 and is run as a stock corporation. The company traditionally manufactures touring, city and regional buses. For some years now, minibuses have also been offered for city and short-haul transport. At the beginning of 2009 the company got into a crisis, which is why a large number of employees had to be laid off. In June 2009, however , the competitor Marcopolo SA rejected the takeover.

Company today

Production was stopped in 2009. There were branch plants in Colombia , Mexico and Cuba . Behind the Brazilian bus manufacturer Marcopolo , Busscar Ônibus SA was the second most important bus manufacturer in South America. The company was also strongly represented in Central America and the Caribbean, especially Mexico. Busscar Ônibus SA has been selling the Panorâmico DD, a double-decker bus, since 1998 . It is one of the most popular and well-known bus models in South America. It is often used on long-distance routes, including the Panamericana . The Panorâmico DD was usually produced as a three-axle version. However, it is also available with four axles for mountain routes. The second front axle ensures better grip on steep roads. The longest bus that the company produced for city traffic (routes with very high passenger volumes) is the Urbanuss Pluss Biarticulado, a 25 meter long double articulated bus (machine car with two single-axle trailers and articulated). With the exception of the engines and chassis, which were obtained from Scania and Volvo and partly from Evobus , the company manufactured the buses itself, ie in particular the entire body and interior fittings.

At the beginning of 2017, the Busscar company was taken over by CAIO Induscar . The new company explicitly refers to the old company name and is also called Carbuss .
