history

Marcopolo SA was founded on August 6, 1949 in Caxias do Sul as Nicola & Cia Ltda with 8 partners and 15 employees. It was produced exclusively by hand. In 1971 the company was renamed Marcopolo SA Carrocierias e onibus .

In 1978 the bus company went public . 13 years later, a branch for the European market is opened in Coimbra, Portugal , which was closed again in September 2009. In 1998 Marcopolo introduced a minibus under the Volare brand . The company now has branches in Argentina , Australia , Colombia , Egypt , India , China , Mexico and South Africa . The buses are sold in over 60 countries.

In 1999 the Brazilian bus manufacturer Ciferal was bought up.

Marcopolo SA is the leading bus manufacturer in South America and was also the market leader before its biggest competitor Busscar Ônibus SA had to file for bankruptcy in 2010.

In December 2011 Marcopolo took a 75% stake in the Australian bus manufacturer Volgren . In April 2014 the stake was increased to 100%.

With the exception of the engines and chassis, which are obtained from Scania , MAN Latin America and Volvo , the company manufactures the buses itself, ie in particular the entire body and interior fittings.

Subsidiaries

  • MVC - started its activities in the automotive industry and gradually expanded its productions in the field of plastics , light , infrastructure and others.
  • Moneo - Marcopolo's financial service.

Products

Marcopolo Paradiso 1800 DD with Scania chassis in Viña del Mar , Chile

The best-known product is the Marcopolo Paradiso 1800 DD double-decker bus . It is one of the most popular and well-known bus models in South America. It is often used on long-distance routes, including the Panamericana . The Marcopolo Paradiso 1800 DD is usually produced as a three-axle version. However, it is also available with four axles for mountain routes. The second front axle ensures better grip (traction) on steep stretches. This double-decker bus is available with different equipment. Many South American bus companies buy it as a bus with a high level of comfort for night long-distance trips. It will then be equipped with, among other things, two sanitary rooms, a kitchen and reclining seats that can be converted to full horizontal reclining areas. The double-decker bus then has 9 seats on the lower deck and 40 seats on the upper deck (sleeping seats). TVs for onboard entertainment are standard on both decks, as is powerful air conditioning and heating. Marco Polo offers for this bus and high-tech equipment such as emergency brake assist with Active Brake Assist (ABA) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), ie adaptive cruise control to radar-based. GPS monitoring is also offered.
