(29457) Marcopolo is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 25, 1997 by the Italian amateur astronomer Vittorio Goretti at his private observatory Pianoro ( IAU code 610) in Pianoro near Bologna .

The asteroid was named after the Venetian merchant and explorer Marco Polo (1254–1324), who was one of the first Europeans to travel to China from 1271 and who returned after a 20-year stay there. His travelogue “ Il Milione ” influenced the knowledge of the world at that time.
