NGC 490 is a spiral dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type S in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 103 million light years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years across. It is a member of the 7 galaxies counting NGC 488 group ( LGG 21 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 486 , NGC 488 , NGC 492 , NGC 500 .
The object was discovered on December 6, 1850 by the Irish astronomer Bindon Blood Stoney , an assistant to William Parsons .
