NGC 470 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 109 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 90,000 light-years across. Together with NGC 474 it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair Arp 227 together with NGC 467 the galaxy trio KTG 5 and the center of the galaxy group Abell 227 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class galaxies with concentric rings .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 462 , NGC 467, NGC 474 , IC 91 .
The object was discovered on December 13, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel .
