NGC 450 / UGC 807 is an optical pair of two overlapping spiral galaxies in the constellation Whale . The centers of the two galaxies are only separated from each other by about 80 ″. The galaxy NGC 450 has an angular extent of a little more than 3 ′. At a distance of about 82 million light-years, it is significantly closer to the Milky Way than the galaxy UGC 807 (about 500 million light years), which is located a little further northeast . The overlap of the two galaxies makes it possible to estimate the amount of dust in the outer disk of the foreground galaxy NGC 450.

Moles et al contradicted the view that the galaxies are at very different distances. in a study published in 1994 in which the authors concluded that there were clear indications of a gravitational interaction between the two objects. However, the analysis of the rotation curves of the galaxies (Rubin and Ford, 1983) and their clearly divergent redshifts speak against this result.

This first description of the object goes back to Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel , who observed it on October 1, 1785 as a very faint fog.
