NGC 440 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Toucan on southern sky . It is an estimated 219 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 434 and PGC 4344 , it forms the galaxy trio KTS 8 . The galaxy is part of the 10-member NGC 434 group ( LGG 19 ).
The object was discovered on September 27, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
