NGC 438 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Sculptor in the southern sky . It is an estimated 154 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 424 .
The object was discovered on September 1, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
