NGC 426 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E3 in the constellation Forest Fish south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 235 million light years from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light years across.

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 429 , NGC 430 , IC 1640 , IC 1643 .

The object was discovered on December 20, 1786 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
