IC 1643 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 248 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 60,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 426 , NGC 429 , IC 1639 , IC 1640 , among others .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 18, 1897 .
