IC 1657 = IC 1663 is an active elliptical galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SBbc in the Sculptor constellation in the southern sky . It is an estimated 159 million light years from the Milky Way and about 115,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 427 , NGC 439 , NGC 441 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2012hd was observed here.
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on September 4, 1897 .
