IC 1639 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type cE in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 243 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 65,000 ly. Together with IC 1640 , it probably forms a gravitationally bound duo. In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 426 , NGC 429 , NGC 430 , IC 1643 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 14, 1903 .
