The Mühlbachdamm

The Mühlbachdamm is an artificially created dam near the Middle Franconian municipality of Burgthann in the district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria .

location

The dam is part of the former Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal . It is located directly on the municipal boundary between Schwarzenbruck and Burgthann. It is located about 250 meters southeast of the Burgthann train station and one kilometer northeast of the Pfeifferhütte district of Schwarzenbruck . It is part of the Schwarzachtal landscape protection area with side valleys.

description

Lock 36

The earth dam completely spans a deep valley cut of the eponymous "Mühlbach". The dam is about 205 meters long and 16 meters high. Together with the Gruberbach, Kettenbach, Schwarzenbach and Distelloch dams, it is one of the largest of the 70 dams in the Ludwig Canal . The steeply sloping dam shoulders are completely wooded and difficult to access due to dense bushes. The dense vegetation also means that it is usually not even perceived as an independent and powerful dam. At the western end of the dam there is a chamber lock , the so-called lock 36 . To the east it is demarcated by a dam on the Nuremberg – Regensburg railway line . In the past, instead of the embankment, there was a railway bridge through which the canal ran. Today, the water balance in the sewer sections is carried out through underground piping. So-called towpaths lead along both sides of the dam crest of the canal . The northern path is gravel and marked as a cycle and hiking path. This path is part of the national five rivers cycle path and various local circular hiking trails. The southern path on the crest of the dam is unpaved and deeply rooted. A few unsecured paths lead from the dam down to the valley floor.

history

Originally, a bridge canal with four arches and a width of 14.5 meters was planned instead of the dam . For reasons of cost and to avoid problems, it was decided to build a dam. Up to 9,000 workers were working at the same time to carry out the necessary work. In the so-called “cut and fill” technique, the material from the Guglhof incision to the east was used for the filling. Larger landslides, as known on other dams, did not take place here. The canal bed is lined with castle sandstone blocks on the sides along its entire course of the dam crest . Safety gates were not necessary here because of the relatively short lock position between lock 35 and lock 36 (400 meters).

The dam is designated as a building and ground monument by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (D-5-74-157-61).

The natural course of the Mühlbach was interrupted by the construction of the dam. The stream has its source near Ezelsdorf and collects the water from other forest and meadow ditches in its course. Normally, the amount of water is small, but it can increase sharply during melting and flooding. The Mühlbach drains into the Schwarzach near Schwarzenbruck .

Due to the low-lying valley floor, the water of the Mühlbach could not be drained down the canal. A conspicuously generously sized passage was created at the bottom of the valley for the passage. The inlet and outlet portals measure around 4 meters in diameter and are made of castle sandstone in the style customary at the time. The creek is directed in a straight line in a south-north direction over a length of about 60 meters through the dam base. The u-shaped interior and the streambed are completely lined with castle sandstone blocks. Walkways about one meter wide run parallel to the stream on the right and left. The passage previously served as a traffic route between the adjacent mills and the villages.

The creek passage is freely accessible all year round and at your own risk.
