IC 1640 is a compact galaxy of Hubble type C in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 251 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 15,000 ly. Together with IC 1639 , it probably forms a gravitationally bound duo.
The galaxies NGC 426 , NGC 429 , NGC 430 , IC 1643 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 14, 1903 .
