NGC 404 is a lenticular dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . The galaxy is about 10 million light years from the Milky Way and about 10,000 light years in diameter.

Seen from Earth, NGC 404 is only seven arc minutes from the star Mirach (β Andromedae), which is why the object is also known as the "Spirit of Mirach".

Although NGC 404 was accepted as a member of the loose galaxy group LGG 11, an actual physical bond with the other members of this group is unlikely due to the great distance.

NGC 404 was discovered by Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel on September 13, 1784 .

The mass-light ratio is approx. 44 M / L .
