NGC 397 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type S0 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 230 million light years from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years in diameter.
Together with NGC 392 and NGC 394 , it forms the isolated galaxy trio KTG 3 .
The object was discovered on December 6, 1866 by the Irish astronomer Robert Stawell Ball .
