NGC 386 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 255 million light years from the Milky Way and about 30,000 light years across. Together with NGC 375 , NGC 379 , NGC 380 , NGC 382 , NGC 383 , NGC 384 , NGC 385 , NGC 387 and NGC 388 , it forms the galaxy chain Arp 331 .

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This group of galaxies belongs to the class chains of galaxies .

The object was discovered on November 4, 1850 by the Irish astronomer Bindon Blood Stoney, an assistant to William Parsons .
