NGC 385 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 229 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light-years across.
Together with NGC 375 , NGC 379 , NGC 380 , NGC 382 , NGC 383 , NGC 384 , NGC 386 , NGC 387 and NGC 388 , it forms the galaxy chain Arp 331 . It is a member of the NGC 452 group ( LGG 18 ) with 21 other galaxies .

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This group of galaxies belongs to the class chains of galaxies .

The object was discovered on November 4, 1850 by the Irish astronomer Bindon Blood Stoney , an assistant to William Parsons .
