NGC 409 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E2 in the constellation Sculptor at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 294 million light years from the Milky Way and about 130,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 415 .
The object was discovered on November 29, 1837 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
