NGC 417 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / SB0 with an active galaxy core in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 566 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
