NGC 428 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SBm in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 54 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 60,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies IC 83 , IC 84 , IC 87 , IC 88 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2013ct was observed here.
The object was discovered on December 20, 1786 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
