IC 84 is a lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 227 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 428 , NGC 435 , NGC 445 , IC 83 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on November 5, 1891 .
