IC 81 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Whale in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 179 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on October 18, 1887 .
