IC 79 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 564 million light years from the Milky Way and about 150,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 77 , IC 78 , IC 82 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on August 30, 1892 .
