IC 79 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 564 million light years from the Milky Way and about 150,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 77 , IC 78 , IC 82 .

The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on August 30, 1892 .
