IC 96 is a spiral galaxy from the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation fish. It is an estimated 203 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered by Truman Henry Safford on December 1, 1866 . However, the astronomer's description could also apply to IC 1672 . As seen in the wide-field image, Safford's position was so far away that he could have observed both galaxies. However, since he only mentioned one of the two galaxies, it was more likely that he was observing the brighter one. Both the appearance and the brightness with the brighter galaxy are the same in the description.
