NGC 444 = IC 1658 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Scd in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 223 million light years from the Milky Way and about 125,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 452 it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair KPG 28 and with 20 other galaxies they are members of the NGC 452 group ( LGG 18 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 452 , IC 1652 , IC 1654 , IC 1659 .
The object was discovered on October 26, 1854 by the Irish astronomer RJ Mitchell , an assistant to William Parsons , and recorded in the NGC catalog as NGC 444 . On October 17, 1903, this object was rediscovered by Stéphane Javelle and listed in the IC catalog as IC 1658 .
